Emily Ritz is a musician and visual artist who creates otherworldly soul music. A native New Yorker, Ritz spent nearly a decade in the Bay Area making art and performing/releasing music with bands Yesway, Honeycomb, and DRMS. Though her music and art remain very much inspired by the lush landscapes of Northern California, Ritz moved back East to Hudson, NY in 2016. There, she began performing under her own name for the first time and recorded her first solo album Pattern Recess.
Over the years Emily has shared the stage with artists such as Deradoorian, Toro Y Moi, Laura Veirs and Mirah, and collaborated with members of My Morning Jacket, Thao With The Get Down Stay Down, and Two Gallants.
Ritz struggles with Lyme-related arthritis, which at times has left her totally disabled. If you listen closely to her songs, you can hear her experience of feeling trapped in her body, while trying to hold on to the hope for a return to health. The darkness and devastation that comes from loss of mobility is certainly felt, yet the overwhelming sensation given off by these songs is one of healing. It’s rare to find an artist through whom the bliss of creation flows so freely.
Pattern Recess is guided by Ritz’s strong, soulful voice and experimental sensibility. While classic elements of jazz and R&B can be heard, Ritz's sound is enticingly off-kilter due to her subtly unusual melodic choices and inventive use of electronic manipulation. She uses her voice to weave complex harmonies and avant-garde patterns while delivering poignant and romantic lyrics. Confident and idiosyncratic, Ritz calls forth other bold female artists such as Jenny Hval, Amy Winehouse, Circuit Des Yeux, Solange, and early Grimes.
The production on Pattern Recess is varied and fresh. Underneath Ritz’s powerful vocals, her reverb-drenched guitar picking ripples like waves on a pool. Amidst the dreamy fluidity, are moments of charmingly inventive percussion and unexpected instrumentation. Odd time signatures and satisfying syncopation deftly brandish excitement and the occasional sci-fi sound effect adds a playfully cosmic tone. While her intimate songwriting and delicate fingerpicking are akin to the contemporary folk of Jessica Pratt and Angel Olsen, electronic neo-soul twinges call forth the seductive trip-hop of James Blake.
Pattern Recess comes out April 27th, with a solo US tour to follow in May and June. Audiences can expect an intimate and compelling live performance.

It was one of those “wow” moments that sticks with you. He did a short set opening for Future Bible Heroes at Helsinki Hudson. He appeared by himself, backed by a boombox (aha, I thought – very David Byrne). But the sound that came out of his mouth, and the big music that he had behind him – I thought, why is this incredible entertainer just a shy guy who you often see around town if you spend any time walking up and down Warren Street?
Well, much to my surprise, it turned out that Bluhm hadn’t even yet released an album. But now, his long overdue debut is coming out, and he’s celebrating its release with a self-described “night of dancey, melodic and lyric-driven synth pop” at Club Helsinki Hudson on Sunday, September 17, at 8pm. Joining Stephen will be a slew of regional musicians, including Brian Dewan and Andrew & the Jennifers.
One of the things I love about Stephen is how he transforms from a relatively self-effacing, modest man-about-town into a guy who was seemingly born to command a stage. Check him out in this video from that fateful opening set for Future Bible Heroes, where he croons, dances, and delivers his songs right in the moment – not something you see everyone do.
Obvious reference points are Morrissey, David Bowie, and the aforementioned Byrne, but
Bluhm draws inspiration from all over the musical map. The results can sound like power pop, disco, musical theater, or 1980s synth-pop, all united by melodic and lyrical crooning.
Among his favorite artists Bluhm counts an eclectic mix, including Stephen Sondheim, Burt Bacharach, the Beach Boys, OMD, Erasure, and ABBA.

ALEXANDER TURNQUIST
From a recent writeup in Misfit City:
Instrumental reflections on nature and philosophy blend virtuosic twelve-string acoustic fingerstyle with studio-based electronic noise aesthetics, producing a melodious state-shifting thunder of folk baroque/New Acoustic stringwork and reverberant processing which perhaps makes him the heart of an imaginary triangle between Michael Hedges, John Fahey and Jim O’Rourke.
